The Returning Light of a Human Life
Or yashar descends, or chozer rises
אוֹר יָשָׁרor yasharDirect light. Illumination as it descends from source toward receiver.Glossary descends.
אוֹר חוֹזֵרor chozerReturning light. The ascent produced by a receiver who has answered — which completes the circuit that direct light alone leaves open.Glossary returns.
This pair offers one of the deepest ways to understand Chanoch.
Existence itself is or yashar.
You did not author your own being.
The neshamah was given.
The body was given.
Time was given.
Torah is given.
The first movement comes from above.
The spiritual danger is to think that the entire purpose is fulfilled in reception.
It is not.
Something must return.
תְּפִילָּהtefillahPrayer. Read in this study as or chozer: speech that answers rather than speech that demands.Glossary rises.
Mitzvah rises.
Teshuvah rises.
Human choice rises.
Gratitude rises.
Song rises.
The world answers.
Chanoch's whole biography can be compressed into this return.
HaShem gives a human being life.
The human being responds by walking with Him.
The response becomes so complete that the receiver himself rises.
Yet there is still another stage.
The returning light must eventually enclose the descending structure and come back toward the lowest place as a dwelling.
If Chanoch rises and never returns in any sense, the history remains open.
His literal earthly biography ends.
His Torah meaning does not.
The final return of Chanoch is therefore not necessarily a person descending through the clouds.
It can be the return of his principle into embodied עֲבוֹדָהavodahService, and the inner work of it. The measurements describe the palace; the avodah tells us why the palace matters.Glossary.
Human beings becoming transparent while remaining here.
The world learning how to receive without grasping.
Authority learning how to serve.
Technology learning how to carry human dignity rather than flatten it.
Speech learning to answer rather than merely broadcast.
Knowledge learning to dwell rather than conquer.
Homes becoming places in which the Shechinah can rest.
That is Chanoch returned as or chozer completed.
