The Mystery of “V’einenu”

וְאֵינֶנּוּ.

“And he was not.”

The ordinary reading is absence.

The deeper reading can hold another possibility.

He is no longer visible in the mode in which he was known.

That is not the same as nonexistence.

Concealment changes register.

The seed disappears into the earth and a tree appears months later. The seed is not absent from the tree, yet it is no longer available in its former shape.

A thought contracts into speech. The thought has not vanished, but the listener receives it through another garment.

A mother carries life before anyone else can see its face.

Hidden does not mean empty.

Chanoch becomes the human figure of this principle.

The Torah removes him from visible genealogy.

Jewish mystical tradition finds him again in another garment.

Perhaps this is why he could not be fully “lost”.

The concealed thing continued exerting pressure on the tradition.

A verse remained open.

A question remained.

A name reappeared.

A scribe stood inside the heavenly palace and said:

I am Chanoch ben Yered.

The concealment had preserved the identity.
