The heavenly messenger speaks his earthly name

And when everything is stripped back, one sentence remains.

אני חנוך בן ירד.

Original text

I am חֲנוֹךְChanochEnoch, seventh generation from Adam. The Torah records that he walked with Elokim and was taken, without the refrain “and he died” that closes every other life in Bereishis 5. The name shares a root with chinuch, formation.Glossary ben Yered.

The heavenly messenger speaks his earthly name.

That may be the deepest revelation of all.

You can ascend without betraying where you came from.

You can become transparent without becoming faceless.

You can enter a higher form without despising the lower journey.

You can receive a crown without believing the crown created you.

You can bear the Name without claiming the Name.

You can have nothing independently and become capable of carrying almost everything entrusted to you.

You can become a servant so complete that service ceases to feel like diminishment and becomes your deepest freedom.

And for the world approaching redemption, the final lesson is no longer that one extraordinary human being once walked so closely with Elokim that heaven took him.

The final lesson is more demanding.

The earth itself must learn to walk with Elokim.

The home must learn.

The body must learn.

The intellect must learn.

Technology must learn.

Leadership must learn.

Relationship must learn.

Not the erasure of the self but the emptying of false authorship.Glossary.

The receiver must answer, but without severing itself from what was given.

The crown must rise above the head, but never cut itself free from the head it encircles.

The light must descend.

The world must receive.

The world must answer.

And then, instead of the holy human disappearing into heaven because earth cannot contain him, the שְׁכִינָהShechinahThe Divine Presence as it dwells. The word shares a root with dirah, dwelling — indwelling rather than visitation.Glossary finds a place to remain.

That is the new light in Chanoch.

Not that man can become an angel.

We knew that mystery already.

The greater mystery is that a world of men and women, bodies and homes, bread and money, children and language, technology and labour, grief and desire, can become transparent enough that heaven no longer needs to take holiness away in order to preserve it.

Chanoch walked upward before the circuit was complete.

Metatron remembers the path.

And perhaps, from the eighth and onward, עד לעולם ועד, the path turns home.

The first Chanoch was taken because the world could not yet hold what he had become. The Torah of redemption is the making of a world in which he would no longer need to leave.
