What does it mean spiritually for a created being to be called הֲוָיָ״ה הַקָּטָןHavayah HaKatan“The Lesser Havayah.” A title from later Kabbalistic reception designating a garment through which governance is mediated to lower orders. Always read here through bittul and the Creator/created distinction.Glossary?

One answer is that Metatron becomes an icon of בִּיטּוּלbittulSelf-nullification — more precisely, the surrender of the claim to be an independent source. Not the erasure of the self but the emptying of false authorship.Glossary so complete that the Divine Name can be seen through him without the vessel being confused with the Source.

But there is another layer.

Katan means small.

The great being is called small.

This is beautiful.

The celestial prince is the lesser.

The one carrying vast administration knows himself as derivative.

His greatness has not made him metaphysically large before the Infinite.

It has made him more accurate about his smallness.

This is genuine bittul.

Bittul does not mean a person despises himself.

It does not mean personality is erased.

It does not mean intelligence should pretend not to know.

It does not mean beauty must become ugly, strength weak, leadership timid or creativity silent.

Bittul means none of these capacities is mistaken for self-origination.

The violin does not become holy by breaking its strings.

It becomes holy when it is tuned to the music.

Chanoch is not erased by Metatron.

He becomes more completely directional.

אני חנוך בן ירד.
