Chanoch Waiting at the Threshold

The concealed thing does not force its hour

Synthesis

Imagine, as a meditation rather than a claim of revelation, that חֲנוֹךְChanochEnoch, seventh generation from Adam. The Torah records that he walked with Elokim and was taken, without the refrain “and he died” that closes every other life in Bereishis 5. The name shares a root with chinuch, formation.Glossary has been waiting.

Not waiting to be canonised.

Not waiting to compete with Moshe Rabbeinu.

Not waiting to become the centre of a new angelic cult.

Not waiting to be worshipped.

Earlier consciousness might hear “Lesser הֲוָיָ״הHavayahThe customary respectful designation used in Chassidic writing for the four-letter Divine Name, avoiding its pronunciation and its decorative use.Glossary” and be tempted by the idea of a heavenly near-deity.

A consciousness trained by חֲסִידוּתChassidusThe Chassidic teaching, and in particular the Chabad discipline of bringing the highest concepts into a form that transforms the person contemplating them.Glossary hears the exact opposite.

Even this.

Even the most exalted created name-bearer.

Even the Prince of the Presence.

Even the one called by audacious heavenly titles.

Still creature.

Still servant.

Still recipient.

Still אין עוד מלבדו.

Perhaps Chanoch waits for a generation mature enough to love the mystery without needing to violate the Oneness.

That is a very different kind of mystical adulthood.
